Khanna lad Varun impresses all with medal-winning performances in karate
Varun Kumar Joshi, a student of AS College, Khanna, has emerged as a leading figure in Indian karate scene. With an impressive string of national and international achievements under his belt, Varun continues to make his college and country proud.
In the 2022-23 session, Varun represented India at two major international events under the World Karate Federation (WKF) banner. He showcased his skills at the Karate-I Series A Championship held in Kocaeli, Turkey, from September 22 to 25, 2022, and later at the WKF Series A event in Jakarta, Indonesia, from November 17 to 19, 2022. These platforms saw some of the best martial artists from around the world and Varun’s participation stood as a testimony to his dedication and high-level training.
On the national front, Varun secured a silver medal in the All-India Inter-University Karate Championship (team event) held from January 20 to 24, 2023 at Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee University, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. He further dominated the Panjab University Inter-College Karate Competition, winning two gold medals (in kata and karate events) and a silver medal in the kata team event.
In the 2023-24 session, Varun’s performance reached even greater heights. He represented India at the seventh South Asian Karate Championship 2023 held in Kathmandu, Nepal, and made the country proud by winning a gold medal. Back home, he continued his winning streak by clinching gold medals at both Panjab University Inter-College Karate Competition and as a part of the Panjab University All India Inter-University Karate Team.
His consistent performance and exceptional sportsmanship earned him a prestigious recognition. He was the first recipient of the Prof Ram Murti Memorial Sports Person of the Year Award instituted by AS College.
Varun’s journey is not just a personal success story, but a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes across the region. He has proved that with unwavering dedication, hard training and right support, dreams can be turned into reality. His achievements have brought pride to his mentors, college and the entire nation.
Head of the Physical Education Department Gaganpreet Sharma, along with Gurvir Singh, shared that Varun was in every way an exceptional child. “His zeal and enthusiasm to practice and win go simultaneously. The aggression with which he presents himself while at the same time not losing his poise are the qualities which have made him stand apart from the crowd,” the mentors added.
Principal of the college KK Sharma said that, “Varun has in every way done his parents and his alma mater proud. As he continues to aim higher, the entire fraternity of AS College stands behind him with pride and hope.”
