A national-level gold medal winner in the U-15 boxing category, Yamanveer Jawanda of Mandiala Badshapur village, left for Jordan to compete in the Asian Boxing Cup which is being held from April 17 to May 7.

District Sports Officer Gurdeep Singh Grewal said coaches Mohammad Habib and Sunny had supervised Yamanveer’s intensive training and practice till Wednesday evening, hours before he left for Delhi.

“Though Yamanveer is very confident and fully equipped to face even the severest of competition, his coaches did not want to take any chance during his first international competition in which no other aspirant from Punjab is competing,” said Grewal.

Parminder Kaur Gajjanmajra, managing director of the Pioneer Public School, where Yamanveer is a student, said the school management had announced it would support the boxer’s further training.
