Ludhiana hospital carries out rare total scalp reimplantation

The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Mohandai Oswal Hospital, Ludhiana, has achieved a rare medical milestone by successfully performing a total scalp reimplantation.

Scalp avulsion—often caused by road accidents or machinery—is among the most traumatic injuries, exposing the skull and leading to severe blood loss.

The complex procedure was carried out through seamless teamwork between the Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Anaesthesia, Emergency and ICU departments. Total scalp reimplantation is considered one of the most challenging operations in reconstructive surgery, requiring reconnection of multiple arteries and veins—many less than 1 mm in diameter—using advanced super-microsurgical instruments and an operating microscope.
