Focusing on sustainable development and seeking to learn from successful practices across the country, Mayor Inderjit Kaur took part in the national level conference of Chairpersons of Urban Local Bodies held recently in Manesar, Gurugram, Haryana.
The two-day conference was themed ‘Role of Urban Local Bodies in Strengthening Constitutional Democracy and Nation Building’. Mayors and Presidents of around 300 urban local bodies from across India participated in the event.
Dignitaries including Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini were present at the conference. Ludhiana Mayor Inderjit Kaur and Presidents of several Municipal Councils (MCs) from Punjab also attended and were taken on a visit to the Lok Sabha in New Delhi.
The conference served as a significant platform to highlight the vital role of urban local bodies in an increasingly urbanised India. It aimed to strengthen democratic institutions, promote the sharing of best practices and encourage innovative approaches to modern urban governance.
Delegates discussed pressing issues, such as enhancing municipal governance to better meet constitutional obligations and improve public service delivery and overall quality of life for citizens.
The Mayor noted that the topics of women’s empowerment and the contribution of local urban bodies in achieving the goal of Developed India-2047 were also discussed.
“It was a learning experience as Mayors and Municipal Council Presidents from Indore, Delhi, and other cities across the country participated in the national conference. Best practices in various sectors were also shared during the event. We are continuously working to improve the functioning of Ludhiana Municipal Corporation and the insights from the conference will be implemented in the city wherever possible,” she said.
