The scheme has been launched by the Government of India to improve the safety and dignity of sanitation workers and to ensure zero fatalities in sanitation work. The scheme is being run by the National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation. Its aim is to promote mechanised cleaning of sewers and septic tanks, provide occupational safety training and PPE kits, extend health insurance benefits to workers and their families, provide capital subsidies for sanitation-related equipment and vehicles, empower workers through self-help groups and entrepreneurship, change the behaviour of stakeholders towards workers to give them safe and dignified livelihoods etc.

Working under the guidance of MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, civic body officials stated that if sanitation workers wished to enrol themselves under the scheme, they could contact Varun (9646787007) at the MC sub-zone B1 office in Kidwai Nagar on any working day (Monday-Friday) from 9 am to 5 pm. Applications can be submitted till January 25, said officials.
