MC elections: 46.95% voter turnout in city
Ludhiana city recorded 46.95 per cent voter turnout in the MC elections on Saturday. None of the political parties managed to get majority in the poll.
In Ludhiana city, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured the highest number of 41 seats but failed to secure the majority. The Indian National Congress (INC) got 30 while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 19 seats. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) managed to win only two seats and three Independent candidates also won. No seat was won by the BSP, Bhartiya Inqalab Party, Sunahara Bharat Party and Adarsh Jan Shakti Party.
In elections to the Municipal Council, Machhiwara, of the 15 wards, 10 seats were won by the ruling AAP, two by the Congress, two by the SAD and one by an Independent candidate. Machhiwara recorded 69.01 percentage of polling.
In Mullanpur Dakha Municipal Council, 60.13 per cent of polling was recorded. Of the 13 wards, seven seats were won by the INC, three by AAP and three by Independents.
The Sahnewal Municipal Council recorded 61.41 per cent of polling and of the 15 wards, eight seats have been won by AAP, six by the Congress and one by the SAD.
Election to one ward in the Municipal Council, Khanna, and one in Municipal Council, Samrala, were also held. Samrala recorded 65.25 per cent of polling and Khanna witnessed 53.71 per cent.
In Samrala, SAD’s Tejinder Singh registered a win while the results of Khanna were not declared till the filing of the report due to damage to one of the four EVMs.
In Nagar Panchayat Malaudh, of the total 11 wards, seven were won by AAP, two by the INC and two by Independents. Malaud recorded 79.46 per cent of polling.
In a major jolt to AAP, the wives of sitting MLAs Gurpreet Gogi and Ashok Parashar Pappi lost the poll.
Pappi’s wife Meenu Parashar lost to BJP’s Poonam Ratra while Gogi’s wife lost to INC’s Parminder Kaur Indi.
Senior Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu’s wife, Mamta Ashu, also lost the elections. From Ward 69, Deepika Bhalla from the INC won by defeating BJP’s Mala Dhanda. From Ward 71, Leena Sharma, wife of Ashu’s brother Narinder Kala, also lost the poll.
AAP candidate Nandini Jairath won from Ward 71 by defeating INC’s Leena Sharma while Pardeep Sharma of AAP registered a win from Ward 10.
Deepika Sunny Bhalla, Congress candidate who won from Ward 69, said people have shown faith in her and the party and they would work for the development and welfare of the city.
In Ludhiana MC poll in 2018, the Congress had won with an absolute majority by winning 62 of 95 wards. The SAD had won 11 seats, BJP 10, LIP seven, Independent candidates four while AAP could win only one ward.
