The initiative has been taken under the guidance of Mayor Inderjit Kaur and the campaign will start from October 14 onwards. The first major event will be held at BCM Arya Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, following which awareness campaigns would be held in schools across the city.
The Mayor conducted a meeting in this regard at her camp office on Wednesday and issued necessary directions to the officials concerned. Councillor Mehak Gurkaran Tinna, MC Zonal Commissioner Jasdev Singh Sekhon and members of NGOs were among others present in the meeting.
The Mayor said under the campaign, major awareness drives would be conducted in different schools of the city. The aim was to catch students at a young age to bring a positive change in society. Demonstrations, awareness skits, etc, would be prepared and students be made aware of different solid waste management techniques such as segregation of dry and wet waste, home compositing, recycling waste, etc. The civic body will also honour selected students as ‘Swachhta Champions’, who would further work as ambassadors for promoting cleanliness and hygiene.
She said NGOs were also being involved in the awareness campaign. A mechanism was being put in place wherein residents would be able to lodge complaints regarding cleanliness and the civic body would also get feedback from them.
Inderjit Kaur said the civic body was making regular efforts to improve solid waste management in the city but the goal could not be achieved without active participation of residents. The campaign ‘My Waste, My Responsibility’ aims to encourage residents in doing their bit to bring in a positive change in society.
The Mayor also appealed to residents to step forward in large numbers and transform the campaign into a mass movement for ensuring sustainable development.
