Medical college organises CME, quiz to combat TB
On the occasion of World TB Day, the Department of Microbiology at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana, in collaboration with the NTEP DOTS Core Committee, organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session on ‘Tuberculosis Advances: Fight to End TB Today.’
The session focused on the latest developments in TB diagnosis, treatment and prevention, with the aim of updating the medical community on recent advances in the fight against the disease.
The CME was conducted for the faculty members, residents and MBBS students of DMCH, providing a platform to discuss intensified strategies to eliminate TB. The session featured discussions on drug-resistant TB, newer treatment protocols and strategies for early detection, all of which are critical in controlling the spread of TB.
The keynote address on ‘Ending TB: Current Status and Challenges’ was delivered by Dr Ashish Chawla, District TB Officer, Ludhiana. Other sessions were led by Dr Veenu Gupta, professor and head of the Department of Microbiology; Dr Anurag Chaudhary, HOD; Dr Sarit Sharma, professor of Community Medicine; Dr Rajesh Mahajan, professor and head of Medicine; and Dr Akashdeep Singh, professor and head of Pulmonary Medicine.
Dr G S Wander, principal and Dr Sandeep Kaushal, dean Academics, DMCH, emphasised the importance of such initiatives. “Our institution is at the forefront of tackling TB through awareness, research and clinical excellence. This CME is a significant step in keeping our faculty and students prepared to deal with the evolving challenges of TB control,” they stated.
Dr Veenu Gupta added, “Raising awareness about TB is a critical part of our mission. Through the CME, quiz and awareness programmes, we are educating both the medical community and future healthcare professionals on the need to stay vigilant in the fight against TB. We need collective efforts to achieve the goal of ending TB.”
An additional awareness session was conducted for students of CT University, focusing on the importance of TB prevention, early diagnosis and timely treatment. This initiative aimed to educate future healthcare providers who will play a crucial role in TB control.
To further promote awareness, a quiz competition was held for MBBS Batch 2023 and poster/rangoli competitions for paramedical students were organised. A skit performed by students also spread awareness about TB.
The team of Jasman Kaur, Vivek Singla, Samyra Mahajan and Tanveen Kaur won the quiz competition, while Ishita Sainani, Jasman Kaur, Hitaishi and Gurinderjeet Singh secured second place. In the poster competition, Deeksha Sharma and Chahat took the first and second prizes, respectively. The rangoli competition was won by B.Sc. MLT 1st-year students Anmol, Amisha, Komalpreet, Sumit and Mandeep. The judging panel consisted of Dr Vandana Midha, Dr HS Dhooria and Dr Bhawna Garg.
