Medical notes: Successful Liver Transplant
The Liver Transplant Team at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMC&H) successfully performed a cadaveric liver transplant on a 66-year-old patient battling severe liver disease. The liver was donated by a 70-year-old woman from Max Hospital, Mohali, who had been declared brain dead. With consent from her family, her organs were listed for donation through the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO). Led by Dr Gursagar Singh Sahota, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, the team retrieved the liver and transported it via a green corridor to DMC&H. Dr Sahota stated, “This selfless decision has given the patient a second chance at life.” Dr GS Wander, Principal of DMCH, emphasized the importance of organ donation and expressed hope that this act would inspire more people to consider donating organs.
Leprosy Awareness Campaign
The District Health Society’s National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) conducted a two-day awareness campaign on February 10 and 11, aimed at educating students about leprosy and dispelling myths surrounding the disease. The campaign featured a magic show organized at several schools, including Primary School Shahpur Road, Government High School Shahpur Road, Government Girls High School Lakkar Bazar, and S. Kanni C Sec School, Division No. 3, Ludhiana. Performed by Magician Jagdev Alarm, the show highlighted the importance of early detection, treatment, and social acceptance. Civil Surgeon Dr. Pradeep Mohindra emphasised the significance of overcoming misconceptions and stigma, while District Leprosy Officer Dr Preeti Gautam reassured the public that leprosy is completely curable, urging everyone to help spread awareness and support affected individuals.
NMC course concludes at CMC
The National Medical Commission’s (NMC) 5-day course on faculty development concluded at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana. The Chief Guest at the valedictory function was Ludhiana Municipal Corporation Mayor, Inderjit Kaur, who praised CMC Ludhiana for its exceptional medical services and for its contribution to training educators in medical colleges. Mayor Inderjit Kaur presented the Best Poster award for research in medical education to Dr Nimarpreet Kaur and also visited the Heritage Centre of CMC. Senior Deputy Mayor Rakesh Parashar, who was also present at the event, acknowledged CMC’s long-standing history of serving the city whenever required. Dr William Bhatti, Director of CMC, felicitated both the Mayor and Senior Deputy Mayor, highlighting that Inderjit Kaur’s previous experience as a Principal made her an ideal choice for the Chief Guest at this training for medical educators.
