Ludhiana, July 28
In a shocking incident, a large number of people broke into the Dharampura police post of Police Division 3 late on Saturday night and attacked the post in-charge, clerk and constable. They also ransacked the post.
The father-son duo who, along with their supporters, had entered the police post also accused the police personnel of assaulting them in a drunken state.
The injured police officials have been identified as post in-charge Jaswinder Singh, clerk Harish Sharma and constable Lucky Sharma.
According to information, police officials of the Dharmpura police post had erected a naka on the Shingar Cinema road. The police were checking vehicles at night while acting on a tip-off regarding some snatchers roaming in the area. Later, when a father-son duo riding a Honda Activa scooter was stopped and asked to show documents of the vehicle, they started arguments with the police officials. Following which, the officials took them to the police post for questioning, from where the son escaped. After sometime, he returned with his supporters and created a ruckus outside the post. When the police officials tried to control the situation, they were attacked. All of them were injured. The duo accused the police of being drunk and using force against them.
The police officials and the father-son duo had lodged their complaints.
SHO Amritpal Sharma said police personnel had no fault in the incident. The duo along with their supporters were at fault and a case was being registered against them. When asked about the names of suspects nominated in the case, the SHO, instead of giving details, hung up the phone.
Meanwhile, ACP Akarshi Jain did not answer the phone call.
When asked if an FIR is registered in the matter, ADCP-1 Jagbinder Singh said an FIR might had been registered. He needs to check the details first, only then he could reveal information.
What police post in-charge say
Police Post in-charge Jaswinder Singh said on Friday, some motorcycle-borne miscreants had committed a snatching in the New Hargobind Nagar area. After the incident, the police had recovered their motorcycle but they were not caught. The police had set up a naka to catch the snatchers. Sarabjit Singh and his son Harsidak were coming at high speed on a Honda Activa. When they tried to stop the scooter, they said they were journalists. The father and son also misbehaved with the police officials. When the police took them to thana, Harsidak fled the place and later, brought a large number of people with him who attacked the post. Someone in the crowd hit him with a sharp object on the forehead. Constable Lucky Sharma’s uniform was also torn by the assailants. The door of the police post was also broken.
What suspect told media
Harsidak told the media he was going home with his father Sarabjit Singh after closing his shop. Police personnel stopped them on the road and told him to drive Honda Activa slowly but he was already driving scooter at a slow speed. Three police personnel who stopped them were drunk.
“I have a video in which the police personnel themselves admit that they were drunk. They slapped my father and also tossed my turban. The policemen beat me with batons and pushed me and my father into the police post,” he added.
Meanwhile, the ACP shared a video statement on social media in which she stated that a case was registered against the assailants under Sections 121, 132, 221, 331 and 334 of the BNS.
