In addition to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at New Delhi, the Central Government has approved 22 new AIIMS under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). This was stated by Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda in an answer to a question on the shortage of faculty and healthcare services at the institutes. The question was asked by Ludhiana Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora during the ongoing Budget Session. The minister also provided a list of the status vacant positions in the sanctioned and currently operational AIIMS in the country.

In a statement today, Arora said that as per the available data, of the total 5,943 sanctioned faculty positions, only 3,699 posts were filled, leaving 2,244 posts vacant in 23 AIIMS across the country. Likewise, of the total 56,078 sanctioned non-faculty positions, 39,536 were filled and the remaining 16,542 were vacant.

He said at AIIMS, New Delhi, there were 1,235 sanctioned faculty positions, of which only 810 were filled. Similar to the situation at many other institutes across the country. At Bathinda there were 209 sanctioned faculty positions, of which 69 were vacant.

Arora asked the ruling party about the total number of AIIMS that had been sanctioned and were currently operational across the nation. He had also questioned the status of the shortage of faculty and healthcare service providers at these institutions, besides asking about the steps being taken by the Centre to address this shortage.
