Munish from city secures silver in International tennis championship

Munish Marwaha from Ludhiana has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the runner-up trophy in the International Masters Tennis Championship, held at Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh, recently.

The prestigious tournament is part of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Masters Tour, which provides competitive opportunities for players aged 30 and above.

The championship features various age categories with events in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The tournament attracts top players from around the world, making Marwaha’s achievement all the more impressive. Over 100 participants took part in it at Rae Bareli.

Munish (51), the lone competitor from Punjab, made his presence felt by clinching a silver medal in the men’s doubles (plus 50) category. Munish partnered with Jeet Lal Anand of Gorakhpur. The duo overpowered their opponents to reach the summit clash.

Munish and Jeet, after getting the better of their rivals, stormed into the last four-stage. In the semi final, the pair scripted an emphatic 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sanjeev Jaiswal and Brijesh Singh from Uttar Pradesh and secured a berth in the title clash.

However, in the final, Munish and Jeet failed to match up with their opponents — Anuj and Avinash Chandra of Muradabad and went down 2-6, 2-6 and had to content with the runners-up trophy.

Munish, a former sports teacher at local Arya College and then Director, Sports, at Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management, after relinquishing the job, got to the competitive sports. Besides tennis, he played games such as hockey, boxing, fencing, chess and basketball and made his mark there also.

Munish is preparing for the upcoming ITF Masters Tournament scheduled to be held in coming months at Jaipur, Dehradun and Leicester (England), starting from April onwards.
