Nasha mukti morcha to intensify fight against drugs in Malwa zone

Members of the Malwa Zone Nasha Mukti Morcha have vowed to intensify their fight against drug abuse by roping in more volunteers to support village defence committees (VDC) and ward defence committees (WDC) of the localities falling under the Malerkotla, Ahmedgarh and Amargarh subdivisions.

An oath was taken in response to a call made by SSP Gagan Ajit Singh and Additional Deputy Commissioner Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu during a series of meetings held with coordinators of the morcha as a part of Yudh Nashian Virudh.

Anu Babbar, incharge of the Malwa Zone of the Nasha Mukti Morcha, said the fight against drug abuse would be further intensified under the supervision of District Coordinator Nisar Ahmed, and MLAs Mohammad Jamil Ur Rahman and Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra, with a focus on the complete eradication of drugs from the district.

Appreciating the role played by police officials in breaking the supplying chain of drugs in their respective beats, SSP Gagan acknowledged that the information provided by VDCs and WDCs regarding the activities of drug peddlers and their sympathisers had worked wonders.

The SSP said persistent efforts by volunteers of the nasha mukti morcha had resulted in addicts joining mainstream after attending de-addiction courses at government healthcare centres. “The movement has reached remote corners of urban and rural localities, including hotspots of drug abuse,” added he.

ADC Sukhpreet Singh Sidhu said a plan had been drafted to organise events targeted at sensitisation of all stakeholders on the causes and consequences of drug addiction. Those coming forward to shun drugs will be provided essential facilities for rehabilitation and management of withdrawal symptoms, added Sidhu.
