Service lanes in Doraha, especially Rajwant Road, are in a deplorable state due to the incessant rain and the apathetic attitude of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Potholes, deep ditches and depressions have made commuting hazardous, forcing residents to risk their lives.
“The issue is not a new one in any way. Rains are just a part of the story. Actually, the NHAI has never bothered to assess, repair or make amends at any stage. The authorities concerned allow the situation to get worse to spring into action. But this time, even the worst has least affected the officials concerned. Every time one gets in touch with the contractor, he uses the constant downpour as an excuse to evade responsibility,” said Jandeep Kaushal, a social worker.
“In the process of six-laning, the single service lane has ceased to be of any service to commuters. Extracting crores in the form of toll and delivering hellish roads in return, has become the order of the day. We wonder why the NHAI is not held accountable,” said Joginder Kirti, a resident of Doraha.
Jagjiwan Pal Gill, another resident, shared, “The officials concerned should undertake the work of filling potholes and repairing the damaged stretches of the road at the earliest to ensure safe passage for commuters. Also, effective water drainage systems to prevent water accumulation and damage are necessary. The NHAI should prioritise regular inspections, maintenance and repairs to prevent such situations.” The NHAI’s engineer and the contractor could not be contacted, despite repeated attempts.
