NRI among 2 booked for threatening BJP leader

The Ludhiana (Rural) police has initiated a probe into an incident in which two persons, including an NRI, settled in Australia allegedly threatened a BJP leader to kill him and his son in case he did not leave the saffron party.

The accused have been identified as Harwinder Singh Bhimi and NRI Gurpreet Singh Gopi, both residents of Rasulpur Malha village in Jagraon subdivision.

District vice president of BJP Gursimran Singh alleged that the accused had been threatening him of dire consequences in case he did not leave the saffron outfit and disassociate from activities related with functioning of village panchayat.

“Though we don’t have any personal enmity, Gopi started threatening me of dire consequences after I joined the BJP a few months prior to panchayat elections. Having failed to coerce me to leave the party, he (Gopi) threatened to kill me and my son after we succeeded in helping our candidate become sarpanch of the village,” alleged Gursimran Singh.

The complainant alleged that Gopi continued threatening him through conference calls through the WhatsApp number of Bhimi, when he (complainant) blocked Gopi’s phone number.

Investigating Officer Manohar Lal said the accused had been booked in a case registered at Police Station Hathur under sections 296, 351 (1) and 351 (3) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and further action would be taken after verifying allegations leveled by the complainant.
