The 41st death anniversary of hockey Olympian Surjit Singh Randhawa was observed on Monday. Surjit Singh, a member of the Indian hockey team that won the World Cup in 1975, died on January 6, 1984, in a road accident. He was remembered by the Mata Sahib Kaur Sports and Charitable Trust at Jarkhar village, near here on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road.
Players and the director of Jarkhar Hockey Academy, Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, paid tributes to the legendary hockey star. They laid flowers on the life-size statue of Surjit, installed in the main stadium of Jarkhar. Jagroop recalled Surjit’s achievements and urged young players to emulate his discipline and skill.
Surjit played for India in the Munich and Montreal Olympics, the World Cup in Amsterdam and Mumbai, and the Asian Games in Tehran in 1974 and Kuala Lumpur in 1978.
