To protest the gruesome rape and murder of a resident doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) has decided to suspend OPD services at all public healthcare centres of the state on August 16. The doctors demanded expeditious justice for the victim, central law for healthcare professionals and adequate security arrangements at public healthcare facilities of the state.

Emergency and medico-legal services, however, will continue to remain functional.

The PCMSA in a statement issued stated that they reiterate its zero-tolerance stance towards violence against healthcare professionals, remains steadfastly committed towards ensuring their safety. Despite numerous representations to the government officials with regards to the safety and security at our health institutions, nothing concrete has been done till date.

The government needs to walk the talk on the issue by ensuring a safe, secure and conducive environment, effectively aimed at providing seamless healthcare delivery services to the people of the State, it further stated. — TNS
