DARSPREET Kaur, Principal, Guru Nanak Public School, Model Town Extension, began her journey in the field of education nearly 25 years ago with the objective to serve students with commitment and vision. In a conversation with Principal Correspondent Shivani Bhakoo, Darspreet talks about the education system and the changes she has witnessed in students over the years.
n Please share your experience in education. Where have you served and for how long?
I began my journey in education in 2000 as a lecturer at BAM Khalsa College, Garhshankar. Teaching is in my blood—my father was a college professor and his passion for education deeply inspired me. I also taught at IET Bhaddal, Ropar, before transitioning to school education in 2006. Since 2011, I have been associated with Guru Nanak Public School, Ludhiana. I am proud to say that, over two decades, my mission has remained constant—to serve students with commitment, compassion and vision.
n What is your take on the stressful competition in academics? Does it cast a shadow over ‘average’ students?
Indeed, the academic environment today has become overwhelming. At our school, we encourage children not to compare themselves to others. We believe every child is unique and their only competition should be with themselves. Every child has unique strengths and success is not only about marks. We teach students to embrace failure, learn from it, and rise stronger. That’s how they build true confidence and resilience—aligned with our motto of ‘Courage, Drive, Integrity.
n What role do parents play in shaping a student’s future?
Parents are key partners in a child’s educational journey. Their support, empathy and active involvement play a vital role in helping students grow, both academically and emotionally. A strong parent-school partnership is essential. We regularly involve parents through counselling sessions and open conversations to ensure their active role in their ward’s journey.
n Has education become too expensive? Why do parents make a hue and cry over fee, uniforms and books?
I completely understand the economic challenges many parents face. Every parent wants their child to study in a reputed institution, but affordability becomes a concern. At Guru Nanak Public School, we strive to maintain a balance between quality and affordability, avoiding unnecessary burdens on parents. We believe quality education should be accessible and inclusive for all.
n How can we shape students’ future in a better way?
We can shape our students’ future by focusing on holistic development, not just academics. Schools must create a safe environment, where children are not afraid to fail, question or express themselves. Empowering them with life skills, empathy and discipline will prepare them not only for exams but for life. Teachers play a pivotal role in this process, serving as role models and constant guides.
n Is the competition for better grades healthy?
Healthy competition inspires growth, but when it becomes a race, it can harm self-esteem. We teach our students to pursue excellence, not just marks. Learning should be joyful, not a source of stress. Our goal is to create confident, balanced individuals who strive to become better versions of themselves every single day. They should grow into individuals who reflect courage in challenges, drive in pursuit and integrity in action.
