A campaign to sensitise farmers against stubble burning received a shot in arm when members of the Revenue Patwar Union announced to motivate paddy cultivators to shun the malpractice.

Harvir Singh Dhindsa, chief, Revenue Patwar Union, said revenue officials would organise productive events on management of paddy straw.

“As revenue officials (patwaris) constitute the widest and most intimate platform for redressal of issues related with the agriculture, they can be most effective in persuading farmers to shun stubble burning,” said Dhindsa.

He said revenue officials had already been supporting a coordinated movement launched in the district under the supervision of Malerkotla Deputy Commissioner Dr Pallavi.

“We want to make sure that all patwaris should have up-to-date knowledge on alternative methods of handling stubble and availability of equipment required for the purpose,” said Dhindsa.

Earlier, Dr Pallavi had asked officials to sensitise farmers on causes and consequences of violating guidelines of the National Green Tribunal on disposal of stubble.
