The days when Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) was solely an educational hub for students focused on agriculture and allied activities are long gone. Over time, the university has evolved into a vibrant place, attracting students from diverse backgrounds and cultures who pursue studies in science, social sciences, and more.

It is no surprise then that the “hanging out over coffee” culture has also caught on at PAU. The revamped canteens and coffee shops near the Students’ Home have become popular hangout spots, not only for students but also for staff and residents who come for morning and evening walks. However, while these canteen-cafes have become a favourite attraction, cleanliness remains a concern. Despite the presence of garbage bins near all the canteens, many students and visitors fail to dispose of their trash properly, leaving the area littered.

These small shops, located near the Students’ Home opposite the PAU library, attract food lovers who spend one to two hours enjoying snacks and fresh air. The variety of food on offer is extensive, ranging from hot and cold coffee to peri-peri French fries, cheese corn rolls, grilled and non-grilled sandwiches, and spring rolls. The traditional canteen also serves popular snacks like samosas, tea, gulab-jamun, and bread pakoras. These spots remain bustling with activity well into the late evening.

Kumar Gaikwad, a new employee at the university from Maharashtra, has quickly fallen in love with PAU. He described the environment as serene, with a soothing impact on his mind. His two friends, pursuing their PhDs at PAU, share the same sentiment, praising the food and snacks available. The food scene at PAU has earned admiration from many.

Even the morning and evening walkers at PAU have positive things to say. Vikram Kanwar, a regular morning walker, mentioned that the greenery and peaceful atmosphere help him forget the daily grind of life. He enjoys sipping hot tea with biscuits at the canteen while engaging in conversations with people from various states. He believes PAU offers a stress-free environment for relaxation and interaction.

Jyoti, an MSc student, pointed out that although the surroundings are neat and clean, students often leave their leftovers on the tables, contributing to the litter problem. Despite the availability of garbage bins near the canteens, many students and visitors fail to dispose of their trash properly. Jyoti urged students to be more responsible and for canteen staff to ensure that tables and chairs are cleaned promptly.
