If those running the studios are to be believed, this form of exercise improves muscle tone, flexibility and strength.

At the same time, experts warned that the pilates should be done only under the supervision of a qualified trainer.

“This is an exercise in which springs are involved. We can add and subtract the weight but ultimately springs are to be moved by the body parts. One small mistake by the trainer and there is always a chance of injury,” said Srishti Mittal from Athletic Edge Studio. She said with physical training, pilates provide mental therapy as well.

Avni, a beginner said, “I used to see Sara Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor doing pilates and think whether it’s possible for an overweight person like me. More than weight, I have lost inches in the past three months.”

The instructors claim that pilates are an ideal exercise for women, who wish to shed post-partum weight. “In the West, pilates are common. Now, it is gaining popularity in India,” said another instructor.
