Police crack whip on drug peddlers

Around 60 to 70 police personnel, including women officials, were deployed to thoroughly check residences and commuters following inputs that drug peddling was rampant in the locality.
Talking to The Tribune, DCP (Crime) Harpal Singh said the police had been keeping a close watch on the area for the past fortnight after receiving reports of regular drug peddling, particularly around the CRP Colony.
“Police teams in civil dresses were conducting regular recce and keeping surveillance on suspicious persons. The operation was planned for Thursday and kept secret for obvious reasons,” he said.
The DCP said several persons, including two women, were rounded up during the operation. Separate FIRs have been registered against them following the recovery of narcotics and intoxicants. Police teams searched almirahs, beds and lockers at residences of the suspects.
Sunny Kumar, a native of Kovoki village, near Hardoi (UP), was held with 650 g of cannabis. Harpreet Singh of Karnail Singh Nagar was nabbed with 55 intoxicating tablets.
Narinder Kaur and Manjeet Kaur, both residents of Ishar Nagar, were held with 10 g of heroin. Rajat Tiwari was arrested with 20 intoxicating tablets.
Avtar Singh, a resident of Vishwakarma Colony, was nabbed with 5 g of heroin and Chetan Sharma, from Mohalla Suraj Nagar, was landed in police net with 3 g of heroin.
The police said all suspects would be taken on remand for further interrogation to trace their suppliers and main kingpins involved in the racket.
