Punjab Agricultural University start-up innovates apple harvesting
Ludhiana, July 31
Agro Tech Plant, a start-up incubated at Punjab Agricultural University’s (PAU) Punjab Agri-Business Incubator (PABI), has launched the apple catcher, a machine designed to ‘revolutionise’ apple harvesting.
Led by Ishfaq Ahmed Wani, the start-up aims to enhance efficiency and reduce labour costs in apple orchards.
Wani said, “The apple catcher is a versatile and portable machine capable of catching, carrying and collecting apples with remarkable efficiency. Engineered to operate around trees in high-density, medium-density and traditional planting systems, this low-cost innovation can prove a game-changer for apple farmers. The machine can store up to 110-kg of apples, offering the industry a practical and time-saving solution.”
Vice-Chancellor Dr SS Gosal praised the start-up’s ingenuity, stating, “The apple catcher by Agro Tech Plant showcases our young entrepreneurs’ innovative spirit and dedication. This makes harvesting more efficient. Ishfaq Ahmed Wani and his team’s efforts are commendable and reflect the high standards of excellence we aim to foster at PAU.”
Dr TS Riar, Principal Investigator at PABI, highlighted the machine’s potential impact on apple growers. “Agro Tech Plant’s apple catcher is a transformative innovation for the industry, significantly reducing labour dependency and ensuring a smooth and efficient harvesting process. The invention underscores the importance of supporting and nurturing agri-entrepreneurs through incubators like PABI,” he added. — TNS
