Punjab eves lift winners’ trophy in national baseball tourney
Punjab stamped its supremacy by lifting the winners’ trophy in the women’s section in the 37th Senior National Baseball Championship for men and women, held at Akal College ground, Mastuana Sahibin in Sangrur.
In the final, Punjab players overpowered Delhi 2-0 to clinch the title. Nishu and Ramandeep Kaur accounted for one run each to help their team wrap up the issue. Manveer Kaur and Ramandeep Kaur were declared the best hitter and best all-rounder of the championship.
Earlier, Punjab eves thrashed Himachal Pradesh 17-1, blanked Andhra Pradesh 10-0, routed Haryana 13-0 and in the semi-final, they prevailed over Kerala 2-0.
Maharashtra and Kerala shared the third position as the hard-line cup match could not be completed due to rain. In the men’s section, Maharashtra beat Madhya Pradesh 6-4 to clinch the title. Punjab and Delhi shared the third position.
MN Krishnamurthy, president, Amateur Baseball Federation of India (ABFI), gave away prizes to the winners. Harish Kumar, general secretary, ABFI, was the guest of honour on the occasion. Arvinder Kumar and Ashoke Kumar, vice-president and joint secretary, respectively, of the federation and Jaswant Singh Khera, secretary, Akal College, Sukhdev Singh Aulkah and Harbir Singh Gill, president and general secretary, respectively, Punjab Baseball Association, were among others present there.
