late father, which made everyone present in the venue emotional.

Manak was known for his high-pitch voice and singing a rare genre of Punjabi music, ‘kaliyan’. His strong voice was unique and instantly recognisable.

As Shakti Manak sang, the time stood still and everyone was feeling her father’s singing in her voice. She and her brother could not stop tears from rolling down their cheeks. “It is the love of the people of the state that could not stop us from singing and I keep coming to my native place. Singing is my first love and will always be,” said Shakti, who is now settled abroad.

“There can be no one like ‘Kaliyan da badshah’, Kuldeep Manak. Seeing his children on the stage made us emotional today. It was a pleasure

listening to so many Punjabi singers under one roof,” said one of the visitors at the mela.

The first ‘Mela Geetkaran Da’ was organised by the Punjabi Geetkar Sabha, Punjab, in the city with the help

of the singing fraternity

of the state.
