For decades, Rakh Bagh, located in the heart of Ludhiana, continues to serve as a popular recreational spot for the city's residents.

Though no one knows when this public park was established, some historical accounts say it dates back to the time when Maharaja Ranjit Singh ruled the state. It was originally a botanical garden, but became a public park in the early 1970s. For as long as one can remember, it has served as a perfect recreational space for generations of Ludhianvis.

From tiny tots to senior citizens, the public park brings joy and relaxation to many on a daily basis. Despite facing numerous challenges over the years, Rakh Bagh remains a beloved destination, particularly for residents from neighbourhoods such as Chaura Bazar, Field Gani, Chander, Nagar, Dholewal, Pratap Chowk, Dandi Swami and Kundan Puri. With its lush greenery and the iconic toy train, Rakh Bagh has become a favourite spot for children, joggers and walkers alike. The park provides a much-needed breath of fresh air for morning and evening walkers, offering a peaceful respite from the otherwise congested city.

Even the toy train that had been giving joyrides to generations of residents now, still does not fail to capture the attention of children as it travels around the park, making it one of its primary attractions.

Reena Malhotra, a teacher from Pinewood School near Khud Moballa, shared that the school organises an annual trip to Rakh Bagh, where students enjoy the toy train ride. Parminder Mehta, a former councillor, remarked that the park has been a favourite for the city's lower-middle-class families. "The residents enjoy spending time with their families and indulging in affordable snacks. However, some residents are unhappy that the authorities handed over the park to a private entity," he said.
