The demise of AAP MLA Gurpreeet Bassi Gogi has shocked residents across the city. People close to him said he was a character full of wit and humour and a big-hearted man.

During the MC elections held in December last year, in which his wife contested, Gogi, along with his wife, went to file her nomination papers on a scooter, which drew a lot of attention of the media and others.

However, during the Vidhan Sabha elections in the state in 2022, after being elected, the West MLA went to the MC office in a swanky Porsche car. Even at that time, he drew both attention and criticism for being an AAP MLA (common man’s party). When asked about it, then Gogi shared with The Tribune in a lighter vein: “I pay all taxes to the government. I own these cars and I am a responsible taxpayer. Why can’t I come to office in my swanky car,” he asked.

In August 2024, AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi demolished the foundation stone of a pipeline project to be built under the Buddha Nullah rejuvenation project. He had stated that the act was out of frustration over poor performance of their own government in the state. Sore over the contamination in the Buddha Nullah, he went to check the situation and dilly-dallying tactics of the authorities in a boat. The act also became the talk of the town. On Friday, he went to meet environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal wearing a black hat.

Parminder Mehta, who worked with Gogi when both of them were Congress councillors, shared,” I had a Punjab licence that was issued by the Centre while the weapon was old but Gogi called me to his place and offered his pistol, the worth of which was in lakhs. He even did not ask a penny for the same,” he said.
