Residents of Kidwai Nagar are opposing the Municipal Corporation (MC) move to shift the proposed site of a water tank from a vacant plot to a park in their locality.

The sudden change has sparked outrage, with the residents alleging that the new site — lush with trees and used by residents for recreation — was never meant for the construction of a water tank in original proposal.

The MC had initially identified a vacant land for the water tank, which was welcomed by residents. However, they were shocked when the demarcation work began in a nearby park instead of the vacant plot. The park, dotted with trees and equipped with swings for children, is a popular spot for morning and evening walkers.

Talking to The Tribune, Dr Vinod Kapur, a local resident, said: “All of us use the park regularly. It’s a community space for both elderly and children. Now, without any explanation, the authorities have shifted the construction site here. We won’t allow this destruction.”

Another member of the Kidwai Nagar Park Society highlighted that some of the trees in the park are over two-to-three-decades old. “It is already a congested part of the city with limited green areas. The park provides much-needed fresh air and recreational space. Cutting down these trees for a water tank is unacceptable,” he said.

The residents have planned to meet the Municipal Commissioner on Friday to voice their concerns and demand that the water tank be constructed on the originally proposed vacant land, thereby preserving the area’s green cover.
