As the campaigning for the Ludhiana West bypoll heats up, advocate Parupkar Singh Ghuman, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate, has increased the pace of campaign too. He doesn’t believe in holding meetings in huge gatherings, rather he has faith in campaigning in small groups.

Ghuman said when a politician holds a large gathering, it doesn’t prove beneficial as one could only indulge in a one-way communication and listeners could not discuss their personal issues with the former. Contrary to this, when a candidate holds election meetings in small groups, one can have one-to-one interaction with the people and the latter could also take up their issues directly with the speaker.

“I begin my day in a usual manner — interacting with local residents during morning walk in the park in the West constituency. During discussions, I listen to concerns about the lack of basic amenities and pressing issues of the area. Then I assure to the people about providing possible solutions of the issues on becoming the MLA,” Ghuman told The Tribune.

“Every day, after informal talks with the people in parks, my core team schedules as many election meetings in mohallas, open spaces and even in houses of party workers,” he said.

Ghuman said due to meetings in small groups having about 100 persons, he remains engrossed in campaigning from 6 am to 9.30 pm. Every evening, he also does door-to-door campaigning to apprise people of the SAD’s vision for the constituency. Afterwards, he holds meeting with his core team to finalise the schedule for next day meetings.

Ghuman said even at the time of filing nomination papers, he drove himself to the DC’s office like a common man to file the nomination while other candidates such as Congress’ Bharat Bhushan Ashu and AAP’s Sanjeev Arora went with a cavalcade of vehicles. Such practice also cause traffic jams, inconveniencing commuters.
