Sea of supporters pay last respects to AAP MLA Gogi

The shocking ‘accidental gunshot incident’ that cost the life of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurpreet Gogi Bassi (58) has sent shockwaves among residents in the industrial hub. Politicians cutting across party lines reached the residence of the MLA and the cremation ground to attend his last rites.

Besides politicians belonging to different parties, a sea of supporters of Gogi, residents and party workers reached the cremation ground to pay last respects to the politician.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, who was in the city to attend an event against drug abuse, after coming to know about the demise of the MLA, reached Gogi’s house and consoled the bereaved family.

Former cabinet minister-cum-senior Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu, with whom Gogi had differences, also reached his house. While talking to mediapersons, Ashu said when he was a minister, Gogi was a councillor. He still remembers his smilling face and jovial nature.

District Congress Committee president Sanjay Talwar said Gogi was his friend.

“Today, my eyes are wet as I came to Gogi’s house as he is no more,” he said.

MP from Ludhiana Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said Gogi had a huge political experience. He started his political career as a councillor and later became an MLA in the Punjab Assembly. He was always eager to serve society through his political power.

Union minister of State for Railways Ravneet Bittu while sharing a condolence message said he had no words to express as Gogi was a favourite of all across the party lines. He said the MLA was a mass leader and he would always worked for the cause of the people.

Senior BJP leader Capt Amarinder Singh tweets: “Deeply saddened by the shocking and tragic demise of Gurpreet Gogi, MLA from Ludhiana West. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones. May Waheguru ji grant eternal peace to the departed soul”.

Congress MP Manish Tiwari’s tweet says: “It is a very sad and unfortunate event. Gurpreet Gogi had been closely associated with all of us for a long time. He was a Congress councillor, district president of the Congress in Ludhiana and later an AAP MLA from Ludhiana West. What has happened is extremely sorrowful. He was a good and virtuous person, and I pray to God to grant him a place at his feet. I also pray that God gives strength to the family”.

Arvind Kejriwal shared: “Deeply saddened to learn about the untimely passing of Gurpreet Gogi Bassi Ji, MLA from Ludhiana. A leader who served his people with unwavering dedication and compassion, his absence will leave a void that is hard to fill. May his soul rest in peace”.

SAD leader Bikram Majithia and Vijay Inder Singla also shared condolence messages on social media.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s mother Harpal Kaur, cabinet ministers Hardeep Singh Mundian, Tarunpreet Singh Sondh and Kuldeep Dhaliwal and Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Speaker, Punjab Legislative Assembly, AAP MLAs, Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal, ex-Lok Sabha MP Mohammad Sadiq, former MLAs of the Congress Surinder Dawar, Rakesh Pandey and Kuldeep Vaid and ex-MLA Simranjit Bains were among others who attended the cremation.
