In a significant outreach aimed at ensuring justice and rehabilitation behind bars, District and Sessions Judge Harpreet Kaur Randhawa paid a special visit to the Ludhiana Women’s Jail.

“No woman should suffer due to the lack of legal support. It is the judiciary’s duty to uphold her rights and provide her the means to defend herself,” she asserted during interaction with the inmates.

“You still have the power to transform your lives. Let prison be a turning point, not an end,” she told the inmates, urging them to use their time in custody constructively.

She emphasised the importance of not viewing incarceration as a sentence to despair but as a potential springboard for reform and self-betterment. Encouraging inmates to focus on education, skill-building and mental wellness, Judge Randhawa reiterated the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring that prisoners were not denied their basic rights.

She informed inmates about their constitutional right to free legal aid and the services extended by the State Legal Services Authority. Many undertrials were reassured as she explained the process through which they could seek representation in higher courts.

Randhawa also conducted a thorough inspection of the kitchen and food being served in the jail.
