Continuing with his ongoing kar sewa to free Buddha Nullah of widespread pollution, the environmentalist-turned-Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has constructed a bandh on the Jamalpur drain, which has been polluting a Sutlej tributary for years.

Sharing details, Seechewal said that earlier the dirty water of the city’s sewage was falling into the Buddha Nullah through the Jamalpur drain without treatment, and about 60 MLD of this water was leading to the pollution of the water body on a large scale. He said that now, instead of falling into the Buddha Nullah, this dirty water was being pumped up to a 225 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) in Jamalpur with the help of three motors. With this, he said, contaminated water from around one lakh households, which earlier fell into the tributary, will now go to the Jamalpur STP.

Pertinently, the construction work for the temporary system of the pumping station started by Seechewal near Gurdwara Gaughat on December 31 was completed within days.

Seechewal said that continuous efforts were being made with the cooperation of volunteers to restore the sanctity of the Buddha Dariya. Under these efforts, in the first phase, saplings were planted in the vacant spaces along the nullah, while in the second phase, the dirty water falling into the tributary was being stopped and managed.

Seechewal also inspected the Tajpur dairy complex to check the situation of cow dung. He said his next target was to completely stop cattle dung and other waste coming out of factories, dyeing, and dairies from falling into the Buddha Nullah.

After the visit, he held a meeting with the officials at the Jamalpur STP and instructed the Sewerage Board to immediately set up a connection of the Tajpur dairy complex to the ETP plant so that the contaminated water could be cleaned, while the responsibility of lifting the cow dung would remain with him.

Meanwhile, two motors installed at the pumping station have also been started. He said that three motors had been installed at the pumping station, of which two motors will work day and night, while the third one has been kept on standby.
