Shared history of Mullanpur Dakha
Located about 20 kilometres from Ludhiana city, the Mullanpur Dakha town in Ludhiana district has a unique history behind its name. This town derives its name from two villages, Mullanpur and Dakha, which have existed since pre-independence and post-partition periods.
As both villages developed and government facilities began to be established in each, the demand to merge the two villages into one town gained momentum.
After partition, the names of both villages, Mullanpur and Dakha, were joined to create a new town named Mullanpur Dakha. Geographically and in terms of population, Dakha is larger than Mullanpur.
According to long-time residents of the area, the railway station was built on the land of Mullanpur, while the grain market was constructed on Dakha’s land. Over time, several other government facilities were set up on the lands of the respective villages. Eventually, the Nagar Council was formed, adopting the name Mullanpur Dakha.
Despite the new name, some public establishments still carry the names of the original villages. The railway station is still referred to as “Mullanpur Railway Station,” and the police station continues to be called “Dakha Police Station.” On the other hand, private establishments in the town primarily use the name “Mullanpur Dakha.”
Another interesting aspect of the town is that Mullanpur and Dakha maintain separate gram panchayats, each with its own sarpanch. Additionally, the name of the assembly constituency is not Mullanpur Dakha but rather “Dakha Constituency.”
