A woman was seriously injured during a snatching attempt in Model Town here on Friday evening, despite heavy security deployed for Independence Day. The attacker, riding a scooter, dragged the victim before fleeing with her handbag.

The victim, identified as Alka, was walking through a posh residential area when a man on an Activa scooter tried to snatch her handbag. She resisted, holding on tightly even as she was dragged along the road.

The attacker initially failed to escape but returned moments later, forcibly took the bag, and fled.

The woman suffered serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at a city-based hospital.

SHO Balwinder Singh said joint teams from the CIA Wing and Model Town Police Station have initiated investigation to trace the accused.

“We’ve tracked the suspect’s route up to a blind street, and expect to gather vital clues from the area,” he added.

Meanwhile, police are yet to record a formal complaint or statement from the victim.
