While the authorities at District Education Office, Ludhiana, were conducting an inquiry, parents of the affected girls lodged a formal complaint at Malaud police station on Tuesday evening following which the police registered an FIR and arrested the suspect.

Deputy DEO Jaswinder Singh headed the three member inquiry committee set up to verify allegations levelled by the girls and their parents.

Earlier, residents of Lehal and nearby villages, including parents of the victims, gathered at the school to protest against the alleged attempt of school authorities to shield the suspect. SHO Manjit Singh said the suspect was on Tuesday. “Action against any other accomplice would be taken on the basis of information received during the investigation,” Singh added.
