More than a memoir, the book is a testimony to resilience, professional courage, and an immigrant’s struggle for dignity.
Through its pages, Dr Bhullar narrates episodes of injustice and regulatory hurdles he faced as an immigrant professional, while also highlighting his mission to make animal care accessible and affordable for all.
A graduate of Punjab Agricultural University, Dr Bhullar began his career as a Veterinary Officer in Punjab before emigrating to Canada in 1991.
“The fight for justice often starts in silence,” Dr Bhullar writes. “This book is my story, but it belongs to every underdog who’s ever been told they don’t belong.”
The book’s release was celebrated at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, where faculty, students, and veterinary professionals gathered to honour Dr Bhullar’s journey. Presiding over the ceremony, Punjab Cabinet Minister for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development, Gurmeet Singh Khuddian, lauded the book as a beacon for young Punjabis.
“Dr Bhullar’s story strengthens the global Punjabi identity. It inspires youth to confront challenges with courage and dignity,” he said.
Vice-Chancellor Dr JPS Gill praised Bhullar as an exemplary alumnus who had upheld the university’s values throughout his career. “His book will motivate veterinary students to broaden their horizons and pursue excellence with honesty and dedication,” he remarked.
For Dr Bhullar, returning to his alma mater was deeply emotional. “This book is not just my story; it speaks for everyone who fights back against unfairness,” he said.
As applause filled the hall, The Underdog stood not merely as a personal memoir but as a symbol of resilience. Dr Bhullar’s life continues to inspire professionals and everyday individuals alike, reminding readers that determination can carve a path to dignity even in the face of systemic injustice.
