While Harpreet Singh Honey of Roomi village and Gagandeep Singh of Kili Chahalan village were already in police custody, the third suspect, Harjobanpreet Singh Kala, of Roomi, was arrested on Wednesday, hours before the cremation of the deceased held at his native village.
SSP Ankur Gupta said police personnel, led and supervised by SP (D) Harkamal Kaur, DSP (D) Jatinder Singh and Jagraon DSP Jaswinder Singh Dhindsa, had nabbed Harjobanpreet of Roomi village when he was trying to leave the region.
The police are yet to identify other accomplices, suspected to be around nine in number, who had either accompanied the prime suspects during the murder or helped them escape the arrest till now.
Raghbir Singh of Gidderwindi village had informed the police that the prime suspects, along with their accomplices, had killed his son Tejpal when they (complainant and the deceased) had visited Jagraon on Friday. Tejpal received bullet injuries in the chest.
The police had launched a manhunt for the suspects after registering an FIR under sections of the BNS and the Arms Act on October 31.
The police had to face the ire of kin and followers of the deceased as the suspects had succeeded in fleeing the scene. Though the police had arrested two of the suspects on Sunday, the family had refused to proceed for cremation of the body.
Leaders of political parties had made a beeline to show sympathy with the aggrieved family and resentment against the state government. Meanwhile, sources revealed that the bullet had entered the victim’s chest and passed through the area near his heart before exiting.
The body of the deceased was cremated at the ground where he had been practicing kabaddi at his native Gidderpindi village on Wednesday.
