A ruckus was created at Samrala Chowk on Chandigarh Road on Thursday night when a gravel-laden tipper rammed into a Maruti Swift Dzire car and dragged it for about 200 m on the road. Fortunately, an auto-rickshaw driver raised the alarm and told the tipper driver about the incident and got the vehicle stopped.

The tipper driver, Sodhi, was busy talking on his mobile. He did not even realise when he hit the car and dragged it for a long distance. Passers-by pulled out two children and a couple from the damaged car.

Kanika, who was among the occupants of the car, said the incident occurred when she was returning home with her children and husband after attending a ladies sangeet ceremony near Amber Garden. A tipper driver hit their car. The suspect dragged them for a long distance. He was reportedly talking over phone and could not realised that he hit the car.

The eyewitness, auto driver Sunny, said when the tipper driver hit the car, the whole family sitting in the vehicle was screaming. Then he went to the tipper driver’s window and banged on it and asked him to stop his vehicle. The driver was busy on the phone. After the tipper stopped, the children and the couple were taken out. Two doors and the windshield of the car were broken.

The suspect said he had come to Ludhiana to transport gravel from Nangal. He admitted that he had made a mistake.
