Ludhiana, July 13

Tonnes of garbage has been dumped along Old Courts Road, presenting a sheer picture of neglect. Though Ludhiana is among smart cities, the ground reality presents another picture. The stretch has become an eyesore for every passer-by.

Frequent rains have turned the garbage into a mess raising a stink. Passing from the road has become impossible due to the foul smell emanating from the trash.

Near the road many government offices are located but nobody is bothered about the condition of the place. The Zila Parishad department, Water Supply department, post office and Vigilance Bureau offices are among other establishments located on the road adjacent to the stretch.

A worker at a juice shop located near the area said as the monsoon season was going on, things have really turned messy and the need of the hour is that the place should be cleaned and refuse should be removed from time to time. The garbage should be managed effectively.

“We pay taxes every year but the Municipal Corporation has failed to clear the litter from the place, posing a threat to residents. It is not the only exception. Trash can be seen accumulated at various places in the city and these need to be removed on a regular basis,” said Upasana, a resident of the Civil Lines.

Parkash Sinha, who came to the Zila Parishad office, said there was a time when the place was full of life. Courts are located here but now it has been turned into a garbage dump. “The authorities concerned should pay attention towards it. Garbage in large quantities has been dumped here and it has turned a haven for flies and mosquitoes,” he said.

Manjit Singh, who is a frequent visitor to the age-old famous chole-kulche shop, said earlier coming to the place was full of nostalgia but now, it only raises a stink. It had become impossible to commute on the road.

The open drain flowing along the road makes things worse as whenever it rains heavily, the drain overflows and the garbage also gets accumulated and flows onto the stretch.
