The traffic police Ludhiana has intensified the drive against the traffic rules violators by making best use of its e-challaning mechanism. Since January 1, the traffic police have challaned as many as 3,513 offenders after capturing them while committing traffic rules violations in high resolution cameras installed on several traffic signals.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Jatin Bansal said that these 3,513 challans were issued from January 1 to May 15. These challans were related to many violations, including driving without helmet, without seat belt, dangerous driving, triple riding, red light jump, ignoring zebra lines among others.

ACP Bansal added that the data pertaining to e-challans stated that 146 challans were issued in January, 605 in February, 973 in March, 1,032 in April and 757 till May 15. “This e-challaning system was recently reactivated by installing high resolution and advanced cameras on various traffic lights in the city. A dedicated team is sitting at the police control room monitoring these cameras and whenever cops notice a traffic violation, they procure details of the vehicle owner, prepare a challan and the same is then sent at the address of the registered vehicle owner,” added the ACP.

After the challan reaches the house of the vehicle owner, the penalty has to be deposited through the online link and the offender will have one month time, following which the challan will be sent to court. Once a challan reaches the court, then the offender cannot deposit penalty online and will have to the court to pay the same.

“The traffic police has no intention to issue challans, rather it want the people to follow the traffic rules and not break these. The traffic police has also been holding awareness drives in the city to improve the traffic management on roads,” he asserted.
