Traffic congestion in Doraha has become a matter of routine, thanks to traffic police personnel who have done little to ease the situation. Residents and commuters have to face inconvenience for the better part of the day.

Haphazard parking on Railway Road leaves little space for vehicles to move. Violating traffic norms, motorists park their vehicles on the road. Harjiwan Pal Singh Gill, a resident of the town, said, “This is not a one-day problem, rather it has been continuing for months now. The situation goes haywire during the peak hours, especially when the rush in banks or other establishments situated on Railway Road, increases. The haphazard parking coupled with the lack of check by the traffic police has made the situation worse.

“Majority of students who walk to their respective schools and colleges are the worst sufferers. Total chaos can be seen during certain periods of the day on Railway Road as the motorists and pedestrians try to wriggle their way out of the traffic mess. The traffic cops are seldom available to ease the congestion,” shared Dr Onkar Singh, whose clinic is on the main market road. There is practically no space for free flow of traffic. As there is a single market road in Sahnewal on which all types of vehicles, from bicycles to rickshaws, autorickshaws to trucks, buses, converge, the situation goes haywire at one point of time,” rued Jandeep Kaushal, a resident of the town.

Ajay Pal Singh Gill, a resident of Doraha, said, “Some steps needed to be taken to ease the situation. Though the traffic police have been working on it, the situation remains pitiable. The flyover of Rampur should be built as soon as possible so that the traffic is diverted.”

Khanna SSP Jyoti Yadav Bains, when contacted, said she would try her best to regulate the traffic. “I shall identify the spots and make the cops available to regulate the traffic and also issue challans to the offenders,” he added.
