Training prog on preserving veggies

Combating unemployment through self-reliance, the Skill Development Centre of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has conducted a five-day training programme on the “Preservation of Fruits and Vegetables at Domestic Level” for farmers and rural women of the state to help them usher in economic stability for familial dignity.

Organised in association with the Department of Food Science and Technology, PAU, the training was imparted to 55 trainees under the stewardship of MS Bhullar, Director of Extension Education. Meanwhile, 85 farmers from Jammu and Kashmir also visited PAU to get hands-on expertise in mushroom cultivation, oilseed production and seed production of various crops.

TS Dhillon, Additional Director of Extension Education, added that sharing expertise concerning preservation of fruits and vegetables at household level was vital in order to avoid food wastage and for prudent use of daily essentials, thus providing nutritious recipes at nominal price to consumers as well as the family members. Additionally, he said that PAU was open to skill enhancement of farmers, he said.

Arshdeep Singh, Hanuman Bobade, Neha Babbar, Sukhpreet Kaur, Jagbir Rehal and Vikas Kumar explained food safety, packaging and labelling techniques, reasons for fruit and vegetable rotting as well as their management.
