Two criminals nabbed after exchange of fire
The Ludhiana crime branch team arrested two criminals near Phullanwal Chowk around 1.15 am on Sunday. On seeing the police party, the suspects tried to run away on a scooter while firing at the former. In retaliation, the police also fired at the miscreants during which both suffered bullet injuries. The suspects were shot in the thigh. They were admitted to the Civil Hospital where they were said to be out of danger.
The police seized an illegal .32 bore pistol and cartridges from the miscreants.
ADCP (Crime) Amandeep Singh Brar said both miscreants were identified as Gagandeep Singh Gaggu, a resident of Maqsudan, Jalandhar, and Mandeep Kumar Mithu of GTB Nagar, Ludhiana. They had several cases, including of snatching and drug, already registered against them in the past. Both of them had snatched a gold chain from a woman employee of Sixth Sense Spa near Aarti Chowk here on March 4.
The ADCP said a police team had put up a naka in the Dugri area near Phullanwal Chowk to keep a tab over anti-social elements. When the police tried to stop the two suspects, they started firing at the police and in retaliation, the police also fired at them.
A fresh case was registered against them and after obtaining their police remand, further questioning will be done to inquire their role in past unsolved robbery cases. The police would also investigate about the illegal weapon supplier from whom the suspects had bought the weapon.

Dec 2, 2024: The Ludhiana police arrested a wanted criminal, Gulab Singh, of Koom Kalan after an encounter on the Chandigarh road. The suspect suffered a bullet injury on his leg and was admitted to the hospital.
Nov 8, 2024: The police arrested Amit Kumar of the Tibba road area, wanted in robbery and snatching cases, following an exchange of fire on Jassian Road.
Sept 12, 2024: The Ludhiana police arrested a drug peddler, his brother and father after an encounter in Mehmoodpura village on the Dhandran road. While the key accused’s brother was injured in the retaliatory firing by the police, a policeman sustained stab injury on the head.
June 22, 2024: Two persons wanted in a case of attempt-to-murder were arrested after an exchange of fire in Ram Enclave of the Chuharpur area. One bullet hit the police vehicle. Both suspects suffered bullet injuries on their legs, following which they were apprehended.
Dec 13, 2023: Gangster Sukhdev Singh, alias Vicky, was killed in a police encounter on the Kohara-Machhiwara road at Panjeta village. The gangster was facing 28 criminal cases.
Nov 29, 2023: Two gangsters, Sanjeev Kumar and Shubham Gopi, wanted in the Sambhav Jain kidnapping case, were killed during an encounter on the Tibba bridge.
