Vet university dedicates Teachers’ Day to relief for flood-hit community

In a collaborative effort to assist flood-affected communities, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), in partnership with the Animal Husbandry Department, Punjab, and the All Feed Millers Association (AFMA), Punjab, organised a comprehensive animal welfare and health camp at Ladhuka Mandi, Fazilka district.

The event, held to commemorate the Teachers’ Day, aimed to provide immediate relief and support to both livestock and residents impacted by the recent deluge. The university teachers association provided free medicines at the camp. The camp was held under the aegis of Dr JPS Gill, GADVASU Vice-Chancellor. Speaking on the occasion, he said, “Such initiatives during this critical times reflect true commitment towards our community.” Dr Gill highlighted the university’s dedication to farmer and animal welfare.

A team of veterinary experts and faculty, including Dr Bilawal Singh, HS Sodhi, PS Dhaliwal and Tanvika, along with postgraduates and veterinary interns from the university provided a wide range of free services, including on-the-spot treatment for sick animals, vaccination, deworming, mastitis testing, and reproductive health consultations for milch cattle. The team also distributed free medicines and feed among cattle owners. Going beyond their official duties, faculty and students personally contributed social amenities such as dry groceries, human medicines and sanitary pads to help the flood affected. The services were provided to 225 bovine livestock and at least 50 sheep and goats belonging to around 150 farmers.

The AFMA, Punjab, made a contribution to the relief efforts with 100 bags of animal feed. AFMA president Ashok Kumar and secretary GS Sodhi said their association stands with farmers of the state and would continue to provide assistance in collaboration with the university.The event witnessed a large turnout of farmers.
