With 5,203 arms received, deposition rate at 92.54%

As the bypoll in West constituency fast approaches, Ludhiana police is on its toes to make sure the law and order situation remains under control. According to records the police have received 5,203 licensed arms, while the total number of arms issued were 5,634. As per the data procured from Ludhiana Police Commissionerate, 420 licenced arms are yet to be deposited and Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma has issued strict instructions to the police stations concerned to intensify the drive to ensure the deposit of remaining arms.

As per sources, 11 licensed arms have been exempted from deposit even during the election due to security reasons or for use in some security purpose.

The arms deposition report states that the PAU police station achieved 100 per cent deposition, while Sadar police has performed miserably with a deposition rate of just 46.15 per cent.

Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma, while talking to the The Tribune, said the commissionerate had made the maximum deposition and the remaining licenced arms would also be deposited soon.

Sharma claimed that 35 naka points had been activated in the West constituency to keep the law and order situation under control. Suspicious vehicles and persons would also be checked at these nakas to prevent the entry of illegal weapons in the constituency, he added.

Police data states that 92.54 per cent depositions have already been made by the police. Pertinently, the PAU police station achieved 100 per cent deposition with the deposit of 436 licensed arms out of 437 and one is exempted, followed by 97 per cent (65 out of 67) deposition by Haibowal police station, 94.57 per cent (1,551 out of 1,640), 92.65 per cent (858 out of 926), 91.94 per cent (980 out of 1067) by police Division 8, 90.03 per cent (1,096 out of 1,224) by police Division 5, 82.30 per cent (211 out of 260) by Dugri police station, while the Sadar police station at 46.15 per cent is lagging behind.
