A woman strangulated her five-year-old son at Bhanohar village of Mullanpur Dakha in this district.

The incident came to light on Thursday when Biraj’s body was found in the village pond.

After committing the murder, Babita Rani put the body in a sack and threw it into the pond.

Police said the woman, along with her son and husband Shyam Lal, had recently shifted from Hasanpur village to Bhanohar village.

On Wednesday, when word about Biraj’s disappearance spread, villagers started looking for him.

The CCTV camera in the village showed a woman heading towards the pond with a sack on her head. When the villagers questioned Babita, she confessed that she had strangled Biraj and dumped the body in the pond.

Shyam Lal said their three more children had died under mysterious circumstances in the past and it could be possible that his wife was behind their “murders”.

SHO Inspector Ajitpal Singh said that on the complaint of Shyam Lal, a case was registered against Babita and she was arrested.
