Protesting students close PU gate over mandatory affidavit

As the protesting students closed Gate No. 2 of Panjab University (PU) today over the university’s recent call for a mandatory affidavit for first year students in fresh admissions, the authorities appealed to them to discuss their demands, instead of disrupting campus activities.

Many student political groups are protesting against the university’s recent call for a mandatory submission of an affidavit confirming that they would not participate in protests or sit-ins on the campus without permission.

“Panjab University is among the very few universities in the country where student council elections are held every year, reflecting our commitment to democratic values and student participation,” said Prof Amit Chauhan, Dean, Student Welfare.

He said, “Dean of University Instruction Prof Yojna Rawat invited students at her office for talks at 3.30 pm, but their representatives did not turn up. Our doors remain open for a meaningful dialogue. However, blocking university Gate No. 2 is not the right approach. We urge students to come forward for discussion rather than resorting to disruptions on the campus.”

The controversial clause, part of the 2025 Handbook of Information, mandates new students to take pledge against engaging in protests or demonstrations. As per the affidavit clause, the university has asked first-year students to submit a notarised affidavit swearing that they will not organise or participate in protests, rallies or demonstrations, which are held in the designated area.
