Sewer line relocation project launched to address waterlogging in Phagwara
In a move aimed at preventing recurring waterlogging and sewer blockages near the flyover on the national highway in Phagwara, particularly during the monsoon, the state government has approved a sewer line relocation project estimated to cost Rs 81.70 lakh.
The project involves shifting the existing sewer line from beneath the flyover to the adjacent slip road, running from the Phagwara bus stand to Poonam Hotel. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve urban infrastructure and ensure smoother vehicular movement during heavy rains.
Dr Akshita Gupta, Phagwara Municipal Corporation Commissioner and Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), recently held a review meeting with Sewerage Board Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Pardeep Chottani and representatives from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to finalise the technical details.
A follow-up site visit was conducted on Thursday by a team comprising Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Upkar Singh, Traffic Inspector Aman Kumar Daveshwar, NHAI representative Mohit Kamboj, SDO Pardeep Chottani and Junior Engineer Amit Kumar. The team assessed potential challenges that may arise during the construction phase, which is expected to span six months.
DSP Upkar Singh emphasised the need for a detailed traffic diversion plan to minimise inconvenience to commuters during the construction period. Officials noted that coordination between multiple departments, including the MC, Sewerage Board and NHAI, will be key to the project’s timely execution.
The sewer relocation is expected to significantly reduce waterlogging incidents and improve sanitation and road safety in one of the city’s busiest transit zones.
