MPs’ committee seeks robust system for packaged water
New Delhi, March 8
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources has recommended to the government to expeditiously set up a robust monitoring mechanism to ensure selling of “packaged” drinking water/mineral water as per quality standards prescribed by the law.
In its report tabled in Parliament, the committee expressed concerns that low quality water was being sold in the market in the name of packaged water causing serious health hazards.
It pitched for ringing in “urgent measures” to beef up the monitoring staff in States and the UTs to address the issue.
The recommendations are in the context of the committee’s conclusion that there were very few convictions as against the number of violations reported during the past five years: 2014-15 to 2017-18.
