The Election Commission has decided to allow those above 17 years of age to apply in advance to register as voters so that they can vote once they turn 18.

The decision has been taken to ensure greater participation of youth in polls. So far, people turning 18 on or before January 1 of a particular year were eligible to enrol in the voters’ list. Those turning 18 after January 1 had to wait for an entire year to register as voters.
